Hi everyone, my name is Francesca Ferrando I'm a professor here at the NYU program of Liberal Studies, as well as a philosopher of the posthuman. Here I'm going to address very specific concepts, specifically in this video the concept of posthuman.
Are we already posthuman? To answer, yes and no, depending on the philosophical movements we are thinking of. According to Transhumanism, we are not posthuman yet. We were humans; some of us are transhuman, merging more and more with technology while seeing the human as an open notion. Some humans in the close future may become posthuman. For instance, with mind uploading, in which we have the speculative technology of downloading human consciousness onto a machine, that hybrid of the core emerged human consciousness and machinic element cannot be considered human anymore because humans have biological bodies. But it's also related to humans, for instance, from the aspect of consciousness. Another example of posthumans would be humans migrating to Mars and not merging, not procreating anymore with humans living on planet Earth. Eventually, generation after generation, these humans who migrated on Mars may develop into a different species that is connected with the human species but is not human anymore.
So, the answer to this question, "Are we already posthuman?" is no. According to Transhumanism, we were human, we are now transhuman, and some of us in a close future may become posthuman. The answer is yes according to Posthumanism. So yes, we can already be posthuman in the way we address existence. The posthuman here is seen as a philosophy of existence, the way we live. And again, it would also be through the deconstruction of the notion of the human, instead seeing the human as an open frame, no longer enclosed by a cultural biological historical notion. So according to Posthumanism, you can be posthuman now in the way you live, in the way you exist, and in the way you relate to yourself in relation to others through the deconstruction of the human done through the lenses of post-humanism, post-anthropocentrism, and a post-dualism.
