WORKSHOP:
Truth, Relativism
and the Posthuman
Paradigm Shift

November 28th, 2020
Picture
The 5th JCU Posthuman Studies Workshop is organized by the History and Humanities Department of John Cabot University (Italy). The event will happen on November 28th (Saturday), 2020, 5.30 pm ~ 8.45 pm CET, and is featuring many fascinating philosophers, artists and thinkers (in order of appearance): Natasha Vita-More, Francesca Ferrando, Dinorah Delfin, Baris Gedizlioglu, Chrissi Soteriades, Natalia Stanusch, Brunella Antomarini, Stefan Lorenz Sorgner, Giacomo Marramao, Dario Cecchi, Massimo Dell'Utri.

The 5th Beyond Humanism Forum: After the idea of facts being theory-laden, should the distinction fact/meaning be redefined? Or could we simply renounce to use the concept of ‘truth’, as a mere invention? Is the truth a game, played for its own sake, or for the sake of power? What are the responses by transhumanists and critical posthumanists? Which implications do the responses to the question of truth have for art and ethics?

The event is free: you are all very welcome to join! You can access the live stream via Youtube, and participate in discussions using the chat function available.

OPEN CALL
FOR PAPERS
SOCIETY
OF NORTH AMERICA
KARL JASPERS

Deadline: November 30th, 2020
Picture
The Society of North America Karl Jaspers is calling for papers for The Cyborg and Existential Becoming: Exploring Posthumanism with Jaspers. Deadline for submissions is November 20th, 2020. The event will happen on April 23 and 24, 2021.

Posthumanism is a multifaceted phenomenon which finds itself at the crossroads of many interests that drive contemporary philosophy. On the one hand, posthumanism is the result of the modern questioning of human nature. Marxism, psychoanalysis, and structuralism, to name but a few approaches, have all denied the human being the privileged position that it occupied in the Western tradition. On the other hand, posthumanism comprises the attempt at expanding the essence of humans, for example, through the merging of human biology with digital technologies. In the first aspect, posthumanism is linked to the idea of postmodernism, in the second aspect it involves the interest in transhumanism. From an ethical point of view, posthumanism implies a radically inclusive stance that embraces the diversity of human bodies and abilities. Jaspers’ philosophy can relate in a variety of ways to posthumanism, for example, through the ideas of existential freedom and transcendence and his attempt to overcome traditional metaphysics and the assumption of a fixed essence of human beings. At the same, Jaspers can be seen to defend a more classical conception of humanity. The colloquium invites contributions from all backgrounds that explore the possible dialogue between Jaspers’ thought and the various facets of posthumanism.

Please send your working title and a brief abstract (200 words) by November 30, 2020 to the program chair Michael Steinmann: msteinma[at]stevens[dot]edu

Earlier submissions are appreciated and will be processed in the order as they are received. Notification of placement will take place by January 10, 2021.

4TH GLOBAL POSTHUMAN SUMPOSIUM

April 30 - May 2, 2020
Picture

* This event has been postponed due to Coronavirus Outbrake.

Dearest All, we hope you are well. Given the current situation with the coronavirus outbreak, we are postponing the 4th Posthuman Global Symposium “POSTHUMAN AGENCY” for the health and safety of the NYU community, country and out of country attendees. At this time, NYU is restricting large group gatherings as much as possible. The safety of our students, speakers, participants, alumni, staff and friends remains a top priority for the University and NYU Liberal Studies. While in-person events and programming are important, we feel it prudent to exercise an abundance of caution. We will be rescheduling our 4th Posthuman Global Symposium at a time in the future. We'll be in touch once a new date has been selected. Thanks again for your Energy and Vision.

Be Safe and Be Well!
